Jewish Heritage Picture Book Recommendations
Hey friends! 📚✨
So I've been diving deep into Jewish heritage picture books lately and WOW, there are so many incredible stories out there that celebrate Jewish culture, traditions, and values. I put together this list of amazing books by diverse authors and I'm honestly excited about every single one!
For your littlest readers (ages 3-6), "Saturday is Shabbat" by Rahel Musleah is absolutely gorgeous. It shows how multicultural Jewish families celebrate, and the illustrations are stunning. "Samson in the Snow" is perfect for Hanukkah season and teaches kindness in the sweetest way.
If you've got kids ages 4-8, you NEED "Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins" by Eric Kimmel. It's a classic folktale that's both funny and a little spooky (in the best way!). And can we talk about "The Golem's Latkes"? It's about helping others and the art is incredible.
For slightly older picture book readers (ages 5-9), "Oskar and the Eight Blessings" will make you cry happy tears. It's about a refugee experiencing his first Hanukkah in America. So beautiful and timely. "The Always Prayer Shawl" is another immigrant story that really hits you in the heart.
I'm also obsessed with "Ruth Bader Ginsburg: The Case of R.B.G. vs. Inequality" (ages 6-10). Our kids need to know her story! And "The Cats in Krasinski Square" by Karen Hesse is this powerful WWII story about courage that older elementary kids can really connect with.
What I love most about this collection is how these books tackle everything, from holiday celebrations to everyday kindness, from folktales to real historical figures. Whether your kids are learning about Passover, Rosh Hashanah, or just want stories about being a good person (hello, "The Hardest Word" about forgiveness!), there's something here.
Have you read any of these? Which ones are on your must-read list? I'd love to hear your favorites!
